Exploring Santo Domingo: A Guide to the Dominican Republic's Historic Capital
Santo Domingo, the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas, is experiencing a renaissance. While Punta Cana captures the lion's share of beach tourism — 65% of all arrivals in 2024 — the capital city is emerging as a cultural and MICE powerhouse, accounting for 85% of all business tourism activity in the Dominican Republic.
Founded in 1496 by Bartholomew Columbus, Santo Domingo's Colonial Zone (Zona Colonial) is a UNESCO World Heritage site that transports visitors back 500 years. Yet the city is far from a living museum. Today, it pulses with contemporary art galleries, farm-to-table restaurants, rooftop bars, and a creative energy that rivals any Latin American capital.
Getting to Santo Domingo
Las Américas International Airport (SDQ) receives direct flights from major US cities including New York, Miami, Boston, and Atlanta, as well as European hubs like Madrid and Paris. The airport is approximately 30 minutes from the Colonial Zone. Global Experience offers private transfers from SDQ with bilingual drivers, luggage assistance, and direct hotel drop-off.
The Colonial Zone: A Walking Tour
Alcázar de Colón

Catedral Primada de América
Construction began in 1514 and was completed in 1540, making this the first cathedral built in the New World. The architecture blends Gothic, Baroque, and Plateresque styles, and the treasury houses珍贵 religious artifacts and paintings from the Spanish colonial era.
Calle Las Damas
The oldest paved street in the Americas, named after the ladies of the colonial court who would promenade along its limestone path. Today, it is lined with restored 16th-century buildings housing museums, galleries, and cafes.
Fortaleza Ozama
The oldest European fortress in the Americas, built between 1502 and 1508. Climb the Torre del Homenaje for panoramic views of the Ozama River and the Caribbean Sea.
Beyond the Colonial Zone
Malecón de Santo Domingo
A 15-kilometer seaside boulevard that comes alive at sunset. The Malecón is lined with hotels, casinos, restaurants, and monuments including the Obelisco and the Flame of Eternal Vigilance. It is the city's social and recreational spine, where locals jog, rollerblade, and gather to watch the Caribbean sunset.
Los Tres Ojos National Park
A series of three open-air limestone caves with crystal-clear freshwater lagoons, located just east of the city. The park features a dramatic staircase descending into the cave system, where you can take a small boat across the deepest lagoon (over 15 meters).
Colonial Museum Circuit
In 2026, Santo Domingo is investing heavily in its museum infrastructure. The Museo de las Casas Reales, Museo del Ron, and the newly renovated Museo de la Resistencia offer deep dives into Dominican history, from pre-Columbian Taíno culture through the colonial era to modern independence.
